I like stuff with romantic elements and angst, usually YA, fantasy, paranormal/urban fantasy or variations thereof. Usually wrinkles nose at sci-fi due to unlikely tech. Straight girl who likes boys that like boys!
What I loved:
The setup: political alliance through marriage between two mature and accepting parties. They are different species and find each other seriously unattractive, but are determined to make the best of things. Absolutely fabulously free of fuss, angst or drama and instead has a lot of understanding and tons of humour.
The openness & honesty: two strangers meet on their wedding day to become husband and wife, and find in the other a kindred soul, a friend. Their entire relationship is open, frank and funny. And in a two-way Beauty & The Beast setting, they both fall in love with who their spouse IS, not their looks. After all, he thinks she is a hag and she she thinks he resembles a dead eel *grins* Though they gradually come to appreciate the physical aspects of each other too.
The humour! Their bantering is awesome. I also never realised how disturbing human eyes are.
Ildiko & Brishen! They are both so awesome. I want to marry a prince with gray skin, claw-tipped fingers, glowing eyes and a mouth full of razor teeth, please. Sorry, human boyfriend.
What I didn't like:
Scarpatine pie: oh my god that shit was revolting. I tried my best to pretend it was lobster pie. With dead lobsters, mind you. It was lobster pie, right?
The epilogue & setup for the next book: I thought it worked so beautifully on it's own and it really did not need a tie-in for the next book. Now I KNOW there is no HEA, and that makes me so sad. Stupid power hungry bitch-ass queen.
