I like stuff with romantic elements and angst, usually YA, fantasy, paranormal/urban fantasy or variations thereof. Usually wrinkles nose at sci-fi due to unlikely tech. Straight girl who likes boys that like boys!
This really didn’t work for me, mostly due to Vy whom I found querulous, screechy, unreasonable and annoying, and I completely failed to see how everybody kept on referring to him as a dominant man with the respect (and fear) of his pack/ket/whatever. It did not show in his behaviour, whether the narrative was from his POV or Robert’s. This supposedly strong and brusque leader showed such a submissive character when interacting with his boyfriend, his second-in-command & her husband, and I found it really weird. What the characters around him SAID he was, and how he actually was just didn’t mesh.
The characterisation of Robert worked better, but it was still strange - a gentle, nurturing giant of a man with a slightly off-kilter dominant side in bed, who for reasons quite beyond me found Vy’s petulance charming.
I also failed to get a grip on the world-building: Vy lives in a tiny town, his ket/pack/whatever is really big (so big that he kinda doesn’t know who everybody is, but they can still all gather at the house of one of the families in the ket), humans may or may not know abut shifters, there is maybe kinda some sort of fight going on with the wolves in the next town over, but it’s not quite clear what. What a mess.
